“For the sole true end of education is simply this: to teach [students] how to learn for themselves; and whatever instruction fails to do this is effort spent in vain“. - Dorothy Sayers, The Lost Tools of Learning

"All who have meditated on the art of governing mankind have been convinced that the fate of nations depends on the education of youth." -Aristotle

"The educational foundations of our society are presently being eroded by a rising tide of mediocrity that threatens our very future as a Nation and a people." -(A Nation at Risk, US government report, 1983)

"The unexamined life is not worth living." - Socrates

"Is not the great defect of our education today that although we often succeed in teaching our pupils "subjects," we fail lamentably on the whole in teaching them how to think: they learn everything, except the art of learning." - Dorothy Sayers

"Those who substitute anything for work in education are consequently enemies and destroyers of education." - Douglas Wilson

"The trivium is not an attribute of classical education because it embodies an archaic principle of organizing knowledge; it is classical because it is a universal paradigm for learning." (G.E. Veith, Jr. and Andrew Kern)

"Education is a progressive discovery of your own ignorance." - Durant

Should you apply?

~ Academic Disclaimer ~

Please read carefully below before applying.

The Academy for Character Education charter school offers an academically challenging curriculum. We want to work together with you, the parents and students, to create an educationally stimulating environment - one that is scholastically rigorous, comprehensive, and intensive. As such, ACE charter school will not effectively meet the needs of all families.

Our demanding, classically thorough curriculum is shaped by these priorities:

  • clear expression in writing and speaking-in English and Latin.
  • a broad historical and cultural perspective.
  • rigorous reading/study of the classics.
  • a strong foundation of mathematics and science.
  • art and aesthetic development as an integral part of the curriculum.
  • health and physical education for all students.

For a more thorough examination of ACE, please review our website information.

Our Presentation page is a good place to start, then move on to our Classical Education page, then we encourage you fully examine our philosophy and mission by reading our Charter Proposal and the book "The Well Trained Mind".

"Research indicates that high expectations and high standards improve achievement and positively influence student learning."

Parental Involvement

As various studies have indicated, especially in the area of parent involvement in homework research (1), parental involvement is indeed key to their children's academic success. As such, ACE charter school emphasizes parent participation and cooperation in the education of their children.

"...[Parent involvement is] associated with gains in children's IQ scores and achievement and with improvements in parents' teaching behaviors." (2)

"...districts with intensive parent involvement showed the largest achievement gains." (3)

"Students whose parents attended school events and engaged in contacts with teachers had higher achievement than those whose parents were minimally involved or uninvolved." (4)

"...The children of actively supportive parents score highest [in testing], followed by the children of passively involved parents, and then the children of noninvolved parents." (5)

"...educational programs with significant parent involvement components...forms of parent involvement strongly associated with achievement gains included parents helping their children at home after training, tutoring students, and helping in classrooms. (6)

"Achievement and affective benefits (attendance, behavior, attitudes) are associated with: parents serving..., parents working as volunteers, home-school communications, phone contacts, home visits, parent-teacher conferences, homework assistance, home tutoring, and home educational environment." (7)

Parents and School Community Day (SCD)

Parents are welcomed and encouraged to be present on SCD and to be available to help their child with what will be only a fraction of the academic week. The high quality instruction they receive on SCD should be seen by parents as an opportunity to find out what is going to be covered during the week and what Home-Linked Assignments the students will be required to turn in the following week.

Parents and weekly tutoring

See below Schedule

For an overview of what FT or PT enrollment looks like, please see our Enrollment Placement Chart Diagram.

Please be aware of the problems associated with changing enrollment status during the year. If a FT student switches to PT status, their PT mentorship account will be charged for FT usage. In many cases this would mean your account will be nearly empty when you decide to change status.

So, does this sound like a good fit for your family? Are you willing to put out the effort required to help your child succeed as outlined above?

If you do, please continue below
